Frequently asked questions

Why is programme stage more useful here than funding stage?
Because in biotech the two come apart. A company can raise a large Series A on a discovery-stage platform and a smaller one with an asset already in Phase 1, and the money says nothing about what the team is doing this quarter. 88 of these founders are in discovery and 61 have something in the clinic — the second group is running trial sites and talking to regulators, the first is still choosing targets.
What changes if the company is a university spin-out?
The licence terms do, and they are permanent. 107 founders here operate under an institutional licence with milestones, sublicensing conditions and often a royalty stack that shapes every partnering conversation for the life of the company. It also means a technology transfer office had a say in the cap table before any investor did.
Are platform companies with no asset really biotech founders?
60 of them are here, and they are worth separating rather than excluding. A platform without an owned programme monetises through partnerships and service revenue, so its buying behaviour resembles a tools company far more than a therapeutics company. If you sell into R&D, that group is the one with a budget today.
Which modality is hardest to reach cold?
Cell and gene, generally. Those 46 founders spend a disproportionate share of their attention on manufacturing and CMC constraints that dominate the company's timeline, and outreach that does not acknowledge that reads as unfamiliar with the field. Small molecule founders, by contrast, are the most likely to have bandwidth for a first conversation.
Do venture-created companies behave differently?
44 were founded inside a fund rather than by an independent team, and the practical difference is who decides. The founding investor typically holds board control from day one and often supplies the CFO and the search for a permanent CEO, so the person with the title may not be the person with the mandate. Worth knowing before investing months in one relationship.
How do you verify a programme stage claim?
Against registered trial records, published IND activity and company disclosures rather than pitch decks, refreshed on a rolling 30-day cycle with the last pass on 15 August 2026. Stage inflation is common in this sector — describing an IND-enabling study as clinical is an easy sentence to write — so anything that cannot be corroborated stays in the lower bucket.
