Frequently asked questions
- What makes a company "AI-native" rather than AI-adjacent?
- The product stops working if you remove the model. A logistics company that added a forecasting feature is not in this list; a company whose entire value proposition is the forecast is. That line matters because the second kind buys infrastructure, hires researchers, and raises on different terms.
- Is this list national or Bay Area heavy?
- National, though the distribution is honest about where AI companies actually are: 301 of 694 are in the Bay Area, with meaningful clusters in New York, Seattle and Boston. If you only want the Bay Area, the San Francisco list is a tighter fit.
- How do you keep out people who added AI to their title last quarter?
- Founder status is checked against incorporation records and funding announcements, and the company's product is checked against the AI-native test above. Someone who rebranded a consultancy is not a founder of an AI company, whatever the headline says.
- Do you distinguish research founders from commercial ones?
- Yes, and it is one of the more useful filters here. 174 of these founders come from research or academia, and they tend to respond to substance about the work rather than to commercial framing. 103 come from GTM backgrounds and are the opposite.
- Why are there fewer companies than founders?
- 694 founders across 487 companies — AI companies skew toward two and three person founding teams, more so than the broader startup population. Each founder is listed separately because they own different decisions.
- What counts as "raising now"?
- An open round, an announced intent to raise, or a signal that reliably precedes one such as a new CFO hire or a bridge extension. It is a directional flag, not a guarantee that a term sheet is on the table.
