Frequently asked questions
- How is an AI executive different from an AI decision maker?
- An executive here runs a function inside a company whose product *is* AI. A decision maker in the sibling directory buys AI for a company that does something else. The two get conflated constantly and want opposite things: the executive is hiring and building, the decision maker is evaluating and procuring.
- Why does "first in their seat" matter?
- 36% are the first person their company has ever had in that role — first VP Engineering, first Head of Product. They have no predecessor's vendor contracts to inherit, no established process to defend, and usually a mandate to set one. For anyone selling tooling or recruiting services, that is the most winnable cohort on the page.
- Does team size predict anything useful?
- It predicts who does the work. The 137 running teams under 10 are still writing code and taking sales calls themselves; the 45 running 200+ have layers between them and any tool decision. Outreach that works on one reliably fails on the other, which is why the split is on the page rather than buried.
- Are research leaders included?
- Yes, 62 of them, tagged separately. Whether a Head of Research counts as an executive is genuinely arguable — they often have no budget and no reports — but at AI-native companies they frequently decide the technical direction the rest of the org follows, so excluding them loses the person who actually chooses.
- Why is the company count lower than the executive count?
- 281 companies for 438 people: larger firms contribute two or three executives each. If you are running an account-based motion, dedupe by company before sequencing or you will send three variations of the same email into one org in the same week.
- How current is the stage tag?
- It reflects the last announced round, re-checked monthly. A company that raised a Series B quietly may sit in the Series A bucket for a few weeks. Where the stage matters more than the title, filter on the funding signal rather than the label.
