Frequently asked questions
- Why does the instrument matter more than the fund's name?
- Because it decides what the investor is actually incentivised by. A fund holding equity with a token warrant profits from the company and from the network, and those two can pull in opposite directions during a token design argument. A liquid-only fund holds no claim on the company at all and can sell on any Tuesday. Founders who negotiate with a fund's reputation rather than its instrument tend to find that out during the token generation event.
- What is the practical value of an investor who runs validators?
- For a protocol, considerable. The 63 investors who stake or operate validators are supplying security and uptime rather than just capital, and they show up in the operational channels rather than the board meeting. For an application or a tools company, the same capability is irrelevant and should not command a premium on price.
- Are liquid funds worth talking to pre-launch?
- The 34 liquid-only funds cannot help you before a token exists, which is exactly why they are separated out rather than mixed in. What they are useful for is the conversation about how a token will trade once it does — they hold views on unlock schedules and float that are worth hearing early, even though there is no cheque attached to that conversation.
- How much of this list is genuinely still deploying?
- 138 firms have put capital to work in the last twelve months, which is what qualifies them for inclusion. Crypto directories are full of funds that raised a vehicle in a strong market and have been quietly inactive since; a partner who cannot write a cheque will still take a meeting, and that meeting costs a founder a week.
- Which thesis is the most crowded right now?
- Infrastructure and scaling, with 79 investors — the largest bucket and the one where a new company has the most competition for attention. Custody, compliance and institutional, at 44, is the thinnest relative to the amount being built there, which usually means faster responses and less contested rounds for founders in that lane.
- Do governance-active investors interfere?
- 52 participate in governance, and whether that reads as support or interference depends entirely on your token design. A fund voting its position is a stakeholder with a public opinion about your roadmap. That is genuinely useful when they are aligned and a permanent structural problem when they are not, so it belongs in the diligence you run on them rather than being discovered later.
