Frequently asked questions

Does this include Sand Hill Road?
No, and that is the point of separating them. Menlo Park and Palo Alto firms are a different scene with a different meeting culture — the drive matters, the introductions route differently, and a founder based in the Mission will get a materially different response rate from each. Those partners live in the wider Bay Area filter instead.
Why does office location matter for an investor?
Because in-person is still how most first meetings happen here, and 227 of these investors sit within walking distance of each other in SoMa and the Financial District. If you are in town for three days, that clustering decides how many meetings you can physically make.
Are SF-based investors who invest nationally included?
Yes. The filter is where the investor is, not where they deploy. Plenty of these partners write cheques into New York and Austin companies — being local just means you can get the meeting more easily.
How many of these actually lead rounds?
Lead status is on the full record. It is worth checking before you build a raise plan around someone: a fund that only ever follows cannot set your terms, however enthusiastic the first call is.
Is the angel scene here worth the effort versus institutional funds?
181 angels plus 88 operator angels is a third of this list, and they move faster — often a decision in one meeting. For a first cheque under $500k that speed usually beats the signalling value of a fund name.
What is a remote-first, SF-based investor?
Seventy-five of these have no fixed office but live in the city and take meetings here. They are reachable in person; they just will not have a conference room to offer.
