Frequently asked questions

Why is licensing path the first breakdown rather than stage?
Because it predicts more. A founder on a bank partnership answers to a sponsor bank's compliance team and cannot ship without them; one with their own charter moves slower but owns the rails; one on an unregulated surface can ship next week. Two founders at identical funding stages with different licensing paths run completely different companies, and stage alone hides that.
What happened to the BaaS cohort?
134 are still on a bank partnership, and that number has been falling. Sponsor banks tightened sharply after the 2024 consent orders, and several founders here have been through a forced migration between sponsors — an expensive, months-long project that shapes what they will and will not buy for a year afterwards.
What does "live regulated product" actually mean?
217 of 386 have a product in market that touches money movement, credit or custody under a real licence or sponsor. The rest hold a licence with nothing shipped, or are pre-launch. It is the honest version of "traction" for this sector, where announcing a charter and serving a customer are years apart.
Are crypto founders in this list?
Only where the product is financial rather than protocol — a custody or payments business, not a token launch. It is a judgement call and reasonable people draw it differently, so filter on vertical if your definition is narrower than ours.
Why are 29% second-time founders, far above other sectors?
Fintech has a high barrier to a first attempt: licences, sponsor relationships and compliance hires are hard to acquire without having done it once. That concentration means the population skews toward people who already have a network and are unusually unresponsive to generic outreach.
Which of these are worth contacting about infrastructure?
The 61 in infrastructure and compliance buy tooling for a living and evaluate quickly. The 134 on bank partnerships buy under sponsor constraints, so anything touching data residency or model risk needs the sponsor's answer before theirs.
